A Fish & Chips Expose: Where Did Our Favorite Whitefish Comfort Food Come From?

Let the record show… the Southstream team does not play when it comes to fish and chips. Cod, haddock, pollock or hake, whatever whitefish you choose to batter and fry, fish and chips is a menu essential.

While it’s definitely a fan favorite in the U.S. (East Coast, we’re especially looking at you), its popularity isn’t exclusive to this side of the pond. Ever wonder where it all began? We’re doing a special National Seafood Month / “Fish Fact Friday” feature with a historical timeline of fish and chips, dating back to its origins.

  • 15th–16th centuries:
Sephardic Jewish communities bring fried-fish traditions that help shape Britain’s culinary history.
  • 17th–18th centuries:
Fried potatoes gained popularity across Europe, setting the stage for an iconic pairing.
  •  Early–mid-1800s:
Fried fish becomes an affordable, filling favorite among Britain’s growing working class.
  • Around 1860:
Britain’s first fish-and-chip shops emerged. Joseph Malin in London’s East End and John Lees near Manchester are both credited with early shops.
  • Late 1800s:
The chippy takes off. Golden batter, flaky whitefish, and hot chips become a British staple, with cod and haddock leading the way.
  • Early 1900s:
Fish and chips became a national favorite, served with classic sides like malt vinegar, salt, and mushy peas.
  • 1940s:
Through World War II, fish and chips remains a comforting British staple and is notably exempt from rationing.
  • Mid-1900s:
The dish crosses the Atlantic and finds a home on American menus, especially in New England, where cod and haddock reign.
  • Late 1900s:
From neighborhood pubs to coastal seafood shacks, fish and chips became a go-to comfort food across America.
  • 2000s:
Restaurants put greater emphasis on seafood sourcing, consistent portions, and reliable quality.
  • Today:
From traditional chippies to upscale gastropubs, fish and chips keeps evolving. The recipe for success? Crispy batter, tender whitefish, and quality that shines through every bite.

The comfort food that crosses oceans and generations, has earned its place as a plate favorite. However you choose to carry on your own fish and chips tradition, we’d love to make history with you. Contact a Southstream team member for all your whitefish needs.
