Celebrate Earth Day /Month with a Deep Dive into the Ocean’s Role in Our Health and Future

When we think of Earth Day, many of us picture lush forests, blue skies, and green fields—but the truth is, most of our planet lies beneath the waves. Over 70% of Earth’s surface is covered by oceans, which make up an astounding 99% of the living space on our planet. Within this vast blue world lives more than half of all species on Earth, many of which are still undiscovered. The ocean isn’t just a natural wonder—it’s a vital lifeline for billions of people around the world.

More than 2.6 billion people rely on the ocean as their primary source of protein, making seafood a crucial part of global food security. From coastal communities to urban centers, the ocean sustains life far beyond its shores. It supports jobs, economies, and most importantly, our health.

Fish and other seafood are nutritional powerhouses, rich in essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, iodine, selenium, and high-quality protein. These nutrients contribute to heart health, improved brain function, and reduced inflammation. In fact, regular consumption of fish has been linked to a lower risk of stroke, depression, and age-related cognitive decline

For growing children, fish offers even more benefits. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish—especially DHA—are critical for early brain and eye development. Studies show that children who eat fish regularly often perform better in school and have improved attention spans. Additionally, fish provides iron, zinc, and other micronutrients essential for growth and immune function.

The American Heart Association recommends at least two servings of fish per week for both adults and children, as part of a balanced diet. When introduced safely and appropriately, even toddlers can benefit from the nutritional value of seafood.

Of course, to continue benefiting from the ocean’s bounty, we need to ensure we’re treating it with the care it deserves. That’s where sustainable fisheries come in.

Sustainable fishing practices aim to protect marine ecosystems while supporting the communities that depend on them. These practices include limiting catch sizes, protecting juvenile fish, rotating fishing areas, and reducing bycatch (the unintentional capture of other marine life). Through careful management and science-based policies, sustainable fisheries allow fish populations to regenerate naturally, preserving biodiversity and ensuring long-term food security.

Some fisheries also invest in habitat restoration, such as rebuilding coral reefs and protecting mangroves, which are vital nurseries for marine life. These efforts not only support fish populations but also help combat climate change by strengthening carbon-capturing ecosystems.

This Earth Day, let’s remember the vital connection between ocean health and human health. When we choose sustainably sourced seafood, support marine conservation efforts, and reduce our plastic and carbon footprints, we contribute to the resilience of this incredible resource.

The ocean gives us so much—let’s give back by protecting it for generations to come.

The demand for high-quality, responsibly sourced seafood continues to grow — and so do the opportunities.
