Cod vs. Haddock: Which Whitefish Wins? The Great Debate

You’ve likely seen the ongoing debate of Cod vs. Haddock heating up within our sales department. The jury is still deliberating and, no, we have not yet reached a verdict. So, we’re opening the debate up to the public.

While these two spectacular whitefish are part of the same cod family and share many similarities, there are also quite a few differences that set them apart. Review the evidence below and let us know: are you Team Cod or Team Haddock?.

Cod and Haddock are both members of the cod family and share many similarities, but they have distinct characteristics that set them apart. Cod is known for its mild, clean flavor and firm, moist flesh that separates into large, tender flakes when cooked. Its neutral flavor makes it exceptionally versatile, working well in everything from fish and chips and sandwiches to baked and grilled entrées.

Haddock, on the other hand, has a slightly more pronounced, subtly sweet flavor and a finer, more delicate flake. Its flesh is typically softer and more tender than cod, making it especially popular for smoking, baking, frying, and classic seafood preparations.

Visually, the two can also be distinguished by their markings: cod typically has a lighter lateral line and a speckled body, while haddock is recognizable by its distinctive dark lateral line and dark spot above its pectoral fin, sometimes called the “thumbprint.”

Ultimately, cod offers a firmer, meatier bite, while haddock delivers a more delicate texture and slightly richer flavor, making both excellent choices depending on the application.

Whichever whitefish team you’ve chosen, they’re both winners when they come from one of our quality, sustainably caught partners.
